The New Hampshire Dance Collaborative (NHDC) has selected Ellen Smith Ahern as its newest Fellow in the NH Dance Accelerator program. The selection marks another significant step in NHDC’s mission to make dance and the expressive arts better understood and more accessible to the public.

“I’m filled with gratitude for adding Ellen, with all of her promise to harness dance for social good,” said NHDC Founder Joan Brodsky. “Ellen represents exactly the kind of artist we’re seeking—someone who sees dance not just as performance, but as a practical tool for community building and representation.”

Smith Ahern said she is “thrilled and honored” to be selected as a Fellow. “I’m excited to build relationships with other dance artists and a wider community of audiences throughout the state and the region,” she said. “I’m also excited to be in dialogue with the NHDC team, to have thinking partners and co-conspirators.”

The timing of her fellowship comes as arts funding faces substantial cuts across New Hampshire, making NHDC’s entrepreneurial approach to sustainability increasingly vital. “I’m ready to be creative and innovative together and to think expansively beyond traditional funding methods, so that dance making—and art making in general—continue to be vibrant and accessible in New Hampshire communities,” added Smith Ahern.

In addition to offering financial support through NH Dance Accelerator, Brodsky spends substantial time working behind the proverbial scenes to “deepen relationships that already exist for our Fellows and build other relationships.

“I want to broaden their footprint and increase their impact,” said Brodsky, who noted she is in current discussions with a variety of organizations, including 3S Artspace in Portsmouth and Manchester Boys and Girls Club.“Opportunities arise when you are open to them.”

This openness intrigues Smith Ahern. “I’m curious about new partnerships with collaborators, presenters, and community organizations—who else can I be connecting with through dancemaking?” she said. “How can our work support one another’s?”

According to Brodsky, this community focus and profound commitment to use dance as a tool for representation is why she selected Smith Ahern as a Fellow.

“I was interested in her very socially minded approach,” she explained. “Investing in Ellen will be very generative…She is committed, savvy, and has the potential for significant impact.”

Launched in early 2022, NH Dance Accelerator was initially formed to rapidly accelerate the growth and sustainability of New Hampshire-based dance companies and solo artists. However, it has evolved into something more expansive.

“I see expressive movement as a connector of communities, a bridge between art forms, and a catalyst for social change,” said Brodsky. “Expressive movement—whether in dance or theater—can open minds and provide deeper insight into the human condition.”

Ellen Smith Ahern is a Fellow in NH Dance Accelerator, a program developed by nonprofit New Hampshire Dance Collaborative (NHDC). Founded in 2017 by Joan Brodsky, NHDC’s mission is to make dance and the expressive arts better understood and more accessible to the public.

Lila Productions Hires Part-Time Staff Member

Lila Productions has brought on a part-time staff member—an essential step in strengthening their infrastructure and expanding their capacity. This added support allows the company to better manage operations, pursue new opportunities, and focus more deeply on their creative work.

For small arts organizations, even a part-time hire can make a transformative difference. By supporting Lila Productions in this way, we’re helping them build the internal capacity needed to thrive long-term. It’s about making sure their vision has the support it needs behind the scenes, not just on stage.

Working with Lila Productions to develop their Strategic Plan was an inspiring process because it underscored how vision, when paired with planning, becomes a force for sustainable change. Argentine Tango Comes to Portsmouth with “Milonga!” at The Music Hall Lounge

On Saturday, February 22 at 5:00 p.m., nonprofit Lila Productions will present Milonga! at The Music Hall Lounge in Portsmouth, NH. The event will feature acclaimed Tango dancer and choreographer Alejandro Figliolo, who will also lead a 45-minute masterclass at 4:00 p.m.

Deeply rooted in Tango culture and tradition, a milonga offers a space for dancers of all abilities to connect and immerse themselves in the rhythm and emotion of Tango music. “A milonga is as much about the social experience and connection between dancers as it is about the dance itself,” explained Nathan Moyer, co-founder of Lila Productions. “We are thrilled to welcome Alejandro back to the States.”

Milonga! is more than a performance, however. “Audience members can step onto the dance floor, dance, and experience Argentine Tango themselves,” added Moyer.

Milonga! will be performed at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 22 at The Music Hall Lounge in Portsmouth. The 45-minute masterclass is at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $35 for the event, with tickets for the class and event priced at $50. To purchase tickets, visit themusichall.org or lilaproductions.org.

theatre KAPOW Presents Every Brilliant Thing: A Celebration of Community and Inclusion

Theatre KAPOW, Senior Fellow in New Hampshire Dance Collaborative’s (NHDC) Dance Accelerator program, continues to push artistic boundaries with its production of Every Brilliant Thing by Duncan Macmillan.

Running from February 7–9 at the BNH Stage in Concord and February 21–23 at the Winnipesaukee Playhouse in Meredith, the play breaks down barriers between performers and audience members. “Every Brilliant Thing invites the audience into the story, which reflects our belief that art is a collaborative and healing process,” said Production Director Emma Cahoon. “It’s a perfect metaphor for the importance of community in life and art.”

According to NHDC Founder Joan Brodsky, this metaphor of collaborative art as a healer is crucial in today’s often “isolating and lonely world.” “Theatre KAPOW reminds us that healing and connection happen when we share our stories and listen to one another,” she said. “This is the essence of NHDC’s vision—using the arts to create spaces where individuals feel seen, valued, and united.”

Theatre KAPOW will also prioritize inclusivity in the production through a partnership with Future in Sight to ensure accessibility for audiences who are blind or visually impaired. ASL interpretation will be available for the February 9 matinee in Concord.

In addition, community partners Capital Art Therapy and the Jason R. Flood Memorial will join Theatre KAPOW after the February 9 matinee for a post-show discussion. “These organizations align with the play’s themes, offering resources to support mental health, creativity, and suicide prevention,” added Cahoon.

Brodsky added, “Good performance art and dance is much more than entertainment. It can get us out of our heads and into our hearts.”

Supported by the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and NHDC, Theatre KAPOW creates ensemble-driven productions that explore the human experience. Theatre KAPOW’s 2024-25 season is sponsored by St. Mary’s Bank.
